A year after the Playstation 3 has released, we are finally seeing some original games coming to the Playstation Store. The first game that is actually worth the $9.99 and the download is called PAIN. It is one of the most original games to hit the Playstation 3. The basis of the game is to launch your character, who goes by the name of Jarvis, out of a large human catapult and into various mischief around a small city. This may sound weird, but once you start launching your body around town you will be hooked. Just think of a Jack-Ass game done right.
There are a few game modes featured in PAIN. One of them is Paindemonium. This mode basically lets you do what you want. You can launch Jarvis anywhere you want to. You can also reset the town to its original state by hitting the select button before each launch. There is also a mime throw, which you grab a mime and throw him into various objects. Spank the Money is not what you think. It is basically you trying to take out the monkeys that have overtaken the city. There is also a mode called Horse. The first player in the round aims, launches, and gets his/her best score. Other players must then aim and launch, hitting the same first object as the first player and outdo his/her score. Another mode is Bowling. That is pretty much self-explanatory. And lastly there is a mode called Fun With Explosives. You have two launches to string together as many exploding crates as possible. You set the bar, and your opponents have to string together more explosions than you did.
So is launching your body across a city scape any fun? You bet... Not only can you fly through windows, get ran over by polica cars, knock over signs and fly at people at a high speed. You can grab into items and fling them across the city. There are bomb boxes spread around the town. Some you can hit and they will explode while others you need to grab and fling. Your character can also have extended movement once he/she hits the ground. There is a "ouch" meter that will allow you to use the D-pad to move Jarvis around. If you shake your Sixaxis controller when the "Ouch" meter pops up you will get a flaming "Ouch". You can use the "Ouch" to move Jarvis around the screen to bump up on points. The more damage you make, the more points you get. Jarvis can also do different moves while he is shooting through the sky. You hold a combo of buttons to have him farting, spinning and doing splits through the air.

There’s also some hidden sexual humor in PAIN. I am a huge fan of 80’s cheesy comedy flicks. One of the movies that set a tone in the 80’s was Revenge of the Nerds & it’s sequel Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise. The developers of PAIN must have been fans as well. The movies features some funny things, from Ogre taking a 10 minute piss to Snotty (played by the great James Hong) teaching Booger the ways. There is a part later in the film that has the nerds throwing a kick-ass party at the dumpy hotel they are staying at. The hotel is called "Hotel Coral Essex". It seems that the hotel name has made it into this game. If you catapult Jarvis into the sign and knock off a few words you will get something funny. There is also the doctor sign which can be altered to show a rather amusing gesture. Also check out the signs around town. My favorite are the ones in the Massage Parlor. Classic stuff...
There are also a whole slew of hidden things besides the sexual humor. I found that if you look into a mirror you will see a UFO in the sky. But if you actually look up into the sky you will not see the UFO. Another funny thing I found was when I hit a port-a-pot. Some fat construction worker is sitting inside with his pants down trying to do his business. Pretty funny stuff.
The graphics in PAIN are actually pretty good, especially for a $9.99 game. Although the 1 map that is included in PAIN is rather small, it is filled with a ton of life. The game has a very comical style. Characters look good, and they animate pretty good as well. The sounds around the city are also very good and pretty funny. My favorite is the old lady. She is walking with a walker and you can just plow right through her.
You can also download extra characters from the Playstation Store. Each character is .99 cent and so far there are two characters to download. You can download Santa, which is actually a pretty funny character. He will burp and scream funny lines as he flies through the sky. The second character for download on the Playstation Store is Cookie. She is a female dressed in a Christmas outfit. I am interested in seeing what other characters the will have on the Playstation Store in the future.
One thing that PAIN does lack is online play. This would have been sweet if the game had a sort of online shooting gallery where you could place the catapult around town and shoot at other players. Imagine hitting someone in midair at breakneck speed. So sadly online play has not implemented into the version that you will be buying from the Playstation Store. There might be hope though. Travis Williams, Senior Producer of SCEA said that he is listening to the PAIN community and his team will look into this feature.

So is PAIN worth the $9.99. I would say yes, it is worth it. It may not as deep as the $60 games you buy at the store, but it is one hell of a ride and the hope of future content will pretty much have you coming back to it. I broke this game out to my brother and his fiancé and they loved the hell out of it. It is pretty fun just to shoot Jarvis around and see what happens. So I would highly recommend this game if you are looking for some $9.99 original fun on your Playstation 3.
One more note... This game is NOT for little kids though. There is some mild language as well as the sexual humor. So if you are planning on buying this game for Little Timmy, I would not recommend it. I also doubt Sony needs some stupid lawsuit because some dumbass parent can’t keep track of what their own kid is playing and kid decides to make a human catapult in the backyard.
